Frenulotomy and Specialist Feeding Support
Tongue Tie Assessment and Division
Please visit my FAQs page for more detailed information about the procedure.
A tongue tie (also known as ankyloglossia) is restriction of tongue movement caused by a short or tight membrane under the tongue (the lingual frenulum).
Some babies may benefit from having a restriction released, enabling them to breastfeed or bottle feed more effectively.
I will take a detailed history and perform an assessment of tongue function, before advising whether or not it is appropriate to perform a tongue tie division. I may also offer suggestions for other things to try first, as some breastfeeding and bottle feeding issues may be improved using other measures. Whether or not to proceed with tongue tie division is ultimately down to parental choice, and families should never feel pressured into opting for a procedure.
The procedure itself is very simple, and takes just a few seconds. I aim to make it as quick and gentle as possible and minimise any distress for babies. I will ask parents to feed babies immediately after the procedure, as this helps to comfort them very quickly. Later on, we will talk through after-care, and gentle post-division exercises to encourage tongue mobility and reduce the risk of reattachment.
Tongue tie assessment and release are performed either as part of a home visit consultation, or an appointment in my home clinic in Leighton Buzzard. I am happy to travel within the wider area (Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, Luton, Buckingham, Hemel Hempstead, Towcester, Bedford, Tring, Harpenden, St Albans, and surrounding areas) for home visit breastfeeding consultations and tongue tie assessment and division.
I treat babies up to 6 months of age. I completed training at Wolverhampton University / Russells Hall Hospital in order to become a frenulotomy practitioner, and ran an NHS specialist clinic, setting up in private practice in 2018. I am fully insured with Hiscox. I am a member of the Association of Tongue Tie Practitioners.
